The Oak Newsletter
Happy New Year! Where did last year go? When you're at school it really drags but doesn't it fly past once you're all grown up and have left school?
We hope you had a good Christmas - everyone who came in the pub seemed in good spirits and there was a lovely atmosphere throughout the festive season. Must be over now because the cash and carry has had Easter eggs in stock for several weeks now and I received my first holiday brochure yesterday!
Thank you to everyone who has written in to oppose South Hams District Council's idea of charging to park in the village car park. We have received so much support and Carol intends going along to the meeting on the 12th January (10am at Follaton House Totnes). There are several others going along on behalf of Sustainable South Brent, traders and the villagers. Councillor Cathy Pannell will also be speaking on our behalf - hopefully this will be the end of the matter.
New opening hours
We are now open from 12 noon until 2pm and then from 4pm until close through the week and all day Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon.
New menu
We have a new menu which should appeal to all - steaks are back as well as a mix of new and old favourites. Our set priced lunch menu (£6 one course, £8 two courses and £10 for three courses) is proving popular and will continue everyday 12 noon until 2pm except Sunday when our roast deal will be available.
Forth coming events for your diary:
Burns Night 21st January
We are celebrating this on the Saturday before actual Burns night with a slight twist to the usual Haggis Neeps and Tatties. We will also have a real Scottish bagpipe player to pipe in the haggis and entertain us with a few tunes. Always a popular night with readings and poems during the meal - booking essential -it's a great night out.
Valentines Night 14th February (and 11th!)
As this falls on a Tuesday this year we will also be offering the menu on the Saturday before although booking will be essential for either night. As the room is so perfect for this sort of occasion we will be using Charlies, our first floor restaurant.
St Patricks Night 17th March
Come in and enjoy a night of Irish food and a tasty stout which will be on hand pump rather than one of the keg stouts that you usually see on a bar.
Mothering Sunday 18th March
It's a few months away but I know we get fully booked so just a reminder of the date!
Andrew is currently writing up the menus for our website and will have them all available to view after this weekend.
Its back!!
Following the success of our ale sale last year it has returned for January and February (maybe longer!) £2.50 per pint in the sale or buy ten tickets for £22 (only £2.20 a pint) and the tickets are valid throughout the sale. This year we have kept a couple of our regular ales for those who don't fancy a different pint every time they come in ....but we have marked the sale ales clearly so there's no confusion.
Reminder of our usual monthly events
The first quiz of the year was held on Thursday with Graham on form as usual (although he managed to break the mike when he got excited!).It was something to brighten up the first week of the New Year. The next one falls on the 2nd February.
As usual Wednesday Folk at The Oak is going strong as usual with the fortnightly Children's Folk beginning this Wednesday (11th January). Everyone welcome - to join in or just watch and listen.
The 3rd Thursday Folk begin their sixth year of playing at The Oak (Next Thursday session is 19th January) and are going from strength to strength.
The music quiz is back to the last Saturday of the month (28th January) with Chucky hosting the evening as usual. Everyone is in with a chance of winning the B.A.L.D Q (come along to find out what it is)
We look forward to seeing you this year
Regards
Andrew and Carol Doree
